Permindar Kaur's work in Textiel Plus magazine

TP 231 Cover-page-001Digswell Arts Fellow, Permindar Kaur’s work is the main feature (including the front cover) of the current issue of Dutch magazine Textiel Plus.

Camouflage: From her travels Permindar brought textiles home with her that characterizes the countries of origin. The work Camouflage: Spain-Sweden-India shows small hybrid animal/human figures in front on richly decorated Spanish and Indian fabrics and austere Swedish check cloth. Permindar: “I began to use camouflage to explore the concept of ‘belonging’. The animal/human figures in these works are made from the same fabric as the background. But no matter how hard they try to blend in, their claws and antlers remain visible”. Are they concealing their presence for protection, or are they predators that blend into the environment in order to wait for their chance? On a deeper level the work tells you that no matter how hard you try to conform to a society, you will never forget who you are. A contradiction also portrayed in childlike ragdolls that at a closer view appear to be fearsome opponents. (Translated extract from the article in Textiel Plus. Issue 231, 2015 pg 18-21, M.
