In December 2015 Digswell Artist Allistair Covell was invited by COVER magazine to record his involvement with the Cambrian Mountains Wool 2015 Design Challenge. The article, published to coincide with the final stop on the UK exhibition tour with a show at the National Wool Museum in Llandysul, Wales, focuses on the motivation behind creating the Design Challenge, showcases textile works by other designers involved and mentions Allistair meeting HRH Prince Charles at the private view in July 2015. Allistair writes that “taking part in the Challenge has been a privilege. It has been interesting to work with Welsh wool and a great opportunity to work with and meet inspiring people”. The Cambrian Mountains Wool Design Challenge is appearing alongside the Museum’s permanent exhibition, The National Flat Textile Collection, in the Textile Gallery.
Cambrian Mountains Wool is an initiative of the Cambrian Mountains Farmers CIC and is supported by its president, HRH Prince Charles. It began as part of a Feasibility Study into the commercial possibilities for wool produced in the Cambrian Mountains region. In February 2015, thirty-five emerging and established designer-makers were selected to take part.
Throughout 2015 the Challenge exhibition was displayed at various venues with shows at the Hay Festival and Made by Hand Wales: The Contemporary Craft Fair and an event at the London Welsh Centre during the London Design Festival.
