George Woodcraft 1942-2026 

George Woodcraft was Chief Administrator for Digswell Arts Trust from 1997-2013 during a time of great change for the Trust. He had qualified with a degree in aeronautical engineering from Imperial College (5 A levels) but spent most of his career with Hertfordshire County Council mainly in finance, for which he added further qualifications.   

As our Administrator, George was kept very busy: finding Fellows opportunities to present their work, selling their works into business and government institutions, running school art sessions and stands at summer fairs etc.  One of George’s major accomplishments was the “Artists mean Business” programme; this included a business awareness module alongside art practice mentoring.  It was a great success involving much effort and organisation and hard won funding from the Arts Council. 

Concurrently, George was developing new studios at the Forge and Fenners Building in Letchworth. He also found time to establish the New Maynard Gallery in Welwyn Garden City, running it from 2001-2018.   

George loved music, perhaps even more than art.  He both started and joined several choirs locally, most recently reviving “Music at the Meeting House”.   

I remember George fondly as a bluff and occasionally gruff (but also humorous) father figure committed to art in the community.  One of my happiest times as a Fellow was at the Summer Community days in Welwyn Garden City with George and his trademark hat, helping us run art sessions for kids. 

George is survived by Vicky, his wife, his three children and five grandchildren to whom we send our thoughts and condolences.
