Hanna Matthews
I’m a printmaker and illustrator who enjoys exploring mixed-media approaches to narrative and illustrative work. I like to push textural and tonal mark-making in different contexts and playfully experiment with style, working within the bounds of my chosen composition to different effects.
My work captures fleeting moments and an evocative sense of place in landscapes, with my love of nature and the outdoors inspiring much of my process. I enjoy exploring narratives and playfully working with line and texture to create subtle emotional perspectives aiming to tell or inspire a story.
My sketchbook is a core element in my art practice – I love sketching from life, jotting down ideas and exploring new concepts in an informal space, which I can use as inspiration at any time! Sketching and planning are definitely my favourite part of any project, when I’m excited about all the potential of new ideas and the process feels fluid and instinctual.
Since graduating from Falmouth University in 2022 with a BA in Illustration, I’ve been focused on the importance of handcraft and tactile traditional media in my work, finding beauty in the uncontrollable. As a print member at Digswell, I’m able to enjoy the space to try new things alongside a talented and encouraging artist community, which are proving invaluable to my practice.
