Jo AthertonDigswell Arts alumni, Jo Atherton will be exhibiting in Vessels: An exhibition of fiber art, taking place at the Nave Gallery Annex in Somerville, Boston, USA.
Jo’s unique technique combines both handweaving and basketry has seen her piece, Wanderlust, selected for the December show.
The exhibition asks the question, what is a vessel? Perhaps it is a hollow container, such as a bowl or cask, or maybe it could be interpreted as a person, holding stories and secrets.
Jo explains, ‘in the context of my work, a vessel encases a private space; guardian of a secret place to protect or hide something. This resonates with all of the personal stories and memories many of the flotsam objects in my work unlock within people. As in life, many experiences, people and locations shape our character and the materials used in my vessels represent those defining moments which contribute to our individuality, which my piece, Wanderlust, embodies.’

For further details on the exhibition, taking place from 1st – 21st December 2014, visit the Nave Gallery website, or find out more about Jo’s work on her website, www.flotsamweaving.com.
