JOHN PLUMMER PAINTER
People frequently observe that John has a definite style of his own, so that they can always identify one of his paintings immediately. Big bold and challenging, so not for the faint-hearted but at the same time, life-enhancing. They cheer you up.
John was born in York but the family moved often, with frequent long journeys to grandparents in Pembrokeshire and London, so it’s perhaps not surprising that his life has been full of travel. Around 80 countries so far and still counting.
After qualifying as a solicitor, he found it hard to settle into the career he had chosen as a boy. In his early thirties, desperate to do something creative, he enrolled on a part-time interior design course at the Chelsea School of Art, which led swiftly to him abandoning his job in the City of London to join an old-established interior design company in SW1. He later ran his own interior design business for over 20 years and became Vice-President of the US-based International Society of Interior Designers.
In his early 50’s he returned to his former profession and became a partner in a Westminster firm of solicitors.
Retirement to Norfolk gave him his first opportunity in over 40 years to pick up a paint brush again, and it was back to the schoolroom when he joined a weekly art class in his village on the North Norfolk coast.
Adventurous travel, big Norfolk skies, spectacular sunsets and gentle salt marshes inspired him to use bold colours in an increasingly abstract style. He has continued to widen his horizons since moving to Hertfordshire in 2015 and starting at the Insight School of Art, which he attends twice a week.
With the enthusiastic encouragement of his tutors, many of his paintings, can now barely fit into the boot of his car.
