Digswell Arts fellow Liz Harrington is participating in Struck by Light, an exhibition of experimental photography, taking place in Barcelona this July.

Experiments in the Wonder World of Photography
‘What is a 21st Century photograph?’ What does it look like?

Ellen Carey, American Experimental photographer asks these questions about her own work, following inquiries to women photographers worldwide in an open call put forth by Hundred Heroines in 2020.

Light’s immateriality challenges its makers today, analogue versus digital doubles our challenges. It is here, in modern and contemporary art, that one finds a “linked ring” to characteristics within the DNA of photography – science, optics, shadow, reflection, silhouette, process, chemistry – that today’s practitioners underscore in their concepts, enriching content, adding context, citing this history at the dawn of medium to now in their versions of drawing with light.”

These questions found fifteen artists short-listed to participate in an online exhibition, under the Hundred Heroines: Women in Photography platform whose focus is a global organisation on women in photography. Nettie Edwards was selected by Ellen Carey, ranked as one of the top 100 women photographers worldwide by Hundred Heroines; both Ellen Carey and Nettie Edwards exhibited at the Exhibitionist Gallery in London 2020.

Struck by Light, the exhibition, features outstanding professional women in photography, presented at the International Festival of Experimental Photography in Barcelona, and exhibited at Valid World Gallery, Barcelona is co-curated by Cristina Fontsaré (Barcelona, Spain) and Megan Ringrose (Oxford, UK).

Both exhibitions highlight photographic creativity in our 21st century version of “The Linked Ring”.*

*The Linked Ring was a British photographic society created to propose and defend that photography was just as much an art as it was a science, motivated to propelling photography further into the fine art world.
