‘Naive Confidence II – In Celebration of Trees’ is Sue Pilborough’s new exhibition, opening at the Fenners Gallery in Letchworth Garden City at the beginning of March 2023.
A Digswell Arts Fellow based at the Forge studios in Welwyn, Sue’s creative practice is centred around sculptural and installation work, using a variety of familiar materials in unusual contexts, underpinned by drawing and visual exploration.
Commenting on ‘Naive Confidence II – In Celebration of Trees’, Sue says, “There are many sensory experiences to be had whilst walking through a wood, with one of the inhabitants being trees. I have gathered together a few ‘experiences’ of my own: The ‘burnt’ cylindrical shapes of the tree trunks, the sense of being watched by many ‘eyes’, to the hypnotic movement of shadows, and stirring of the trees as I wander through their home.”
Referencing Gaston Bachelard’s ‘Poetics of Space’, and that nature has an innate ‘naïve confidence’ of continuation, Sue writes, “I am in wonder of our natural environment and am fearful for its and our future, just like we worry for our children’s wellbeing. Let us embrace what we have and ‘celebrate the trees’.”
‘Naive Confidence II – In Celebration of Trees’ exhibition is open at the Fenners Gallery in the Fenners Building, Openshaw Way, Letchworth Garden City Herts, SG6 3EN.
The exhibition runs over the weekends of 4th & 5th and the 10th & 11th March with the gallery open 10am to 3pm.
