Printmaking Open Access
Welcome to The Forge ‘Open Access’ area. Our facilities include a large traditional intaglio press suitable for printing drypoint, collagraph, photopolymer and monoprint plates. We don’t offer any acid etching facilities at The Forge, but you can print and work with your own pre-prepared and etched plates.
There is an Albion press for linocut and woodblock printing. A UV light box for producing solar and photo polymer plates.
The space is bright and spacious with plenty of workbench space, paper damping facilities, large drying rack and some communal equipment like rollers for inking up. We don’t provide consumables such as ink and paper (unless as part of a course) but there is always black ink and paper offcuts available for proofing.
Open Access Sessions
Previous print experience is required to be able to book in for an open access session. If it is your first time with us, you will need to book a ‘Supervised Session’ – this will include technical support and a health and safety induction. If you have previously been an open access user, but not been for a while, or have perhaps worked at another studio, you may be able to discuss booking just an induction on top of your regular open access session. All sessions will be supported by a Forge print member on site. If you need more in-depth or specific help with techniques and processes it is best to book a supervised session. We also offer one-to-one tuition for more comprehensive help and support, please ask if this is something you would like to discuss. Or otherwise book on one of our workshop courses.
Session Costs:
Open Acces Day Session (10am – 4.00pm) – £30
Open Access Half Day Session (10am – 1pm OR 1pm – 4pm) – £20
Induction refresh with Health & Safety – one off £15 (plus the open access session fee)
Supervised Session (includes induction if required) – (10am – 4.00pm) – £50
Available sessions can be viewed on our calendar link above or HERE. You will also be asked to complete an ‘Open Access Questionnaire’ that we will send to you when you contact us.
To book a session please email sue@suejarman.co.uk
Please note, you may be asked to book your first session as a ‘Supervised Session’ if we feel your skills are rusty or need updating – your completed questionnaire is to help us with this.
Tuition and Courses:
One-to-one Tuition – sessions can be arranged to learn new or refresh techniques and processes – please ask for prices

HEALTH & SAFETY
Your first session must include an induction where you will be shown how to use the studio and equipment and made aware of all building safety procedures. Once signed off for health and safety induction you can book a regular open access session.
The print room has plenty of working space and is well ventilated. But you will also be required to bring a face covering that, unless you are exempt, you may need to wear for some parts of your day/session. This may include, but is not limited to, when working in some shared/communal areas, when sharing the studio with several other people and moving around, and when working in close proximity to others during group or one-to-one demonstrations. This is to enable us to keep all Forge users safe.
Please make sure you do not come to the studio if you are feeling unwell.
We encourage the use of lateral flow tests.
Wash your hands frequently
And lastly, please be considerate to others.
