“People often say that this or that person has not yet found himself But the self is not something one finds; it is something one creates” Thomas Szasz

A significant proportion of my work is self-portraiture. I use myself as an actor, to play roles within the paintings. I thought I did this as not to place others in uncompromising positions, who wants to be depicted as Narcissus or Christ? But I now feel that have been attempting to answer “who am I?” And have been playing through various characters in an attempt to discover one’s own identity. To find the answer I must play as many roles as I can. As certain as I am that these possibilities are infinite, I am equally aware that in reality only one life is given.

Some days I feel closer to the answer and other days I sleep tragically through my fingers, drifting towards uncertainty. To look yourself in the eye and see someone you loathe is equally as disturbing as seeing someone you do not recognise.

“The more I produce the less I am certain. On the road along which the artist walks, night falls ever more densely. Finally he dies blind” Albert Camus
