Spring 2020 Print Workshop programme
All these workshops are at The Forge Studios in Digswell near Welwyn, at our fully equipped Printmaking Studio.
Facilities include: Large Etching Press and Albion Press, kitchen and ample on-site parking.
The ‘Forge’ is located in Digswell, Herts (near Welwyn) It is 5 minutes drive from the A1M (junc 6) and a 7 minute walk from Welwyn North train station.
The language of marks; Print paint collage stitch.
Saturday 25th January / Sunday 26th January
Tutor – Sally Tyrie
Times 10.30 – 4pm each day.
Fee is £65 per day inc. all materials

In this 2 day event Sally Tyrie will be delivering an in depth look at methods of creating Multilayered prints by using an exciting mixture of printing, drawing and mark making methods combining print, collage and stitch.
You are welcome to sign up for either both days or one of the days, depending on your interest.
Will involve learning how to create a variety of colourful prints using found natural objects such as leaves, seed heads and textural surfaces, combined with expressive mark making. All Materials included; Oil based Inks, paper and tissue, all sundries.
will involve learning how to develop your print work using linear mark making, stitch embellishing and collage using machine stitch. Students will explore methods of assemblage and ways to add colour, texture and ways of reinterpreting their print work.
Essential Equipment needed – students on day 2 will need to provide their own Sewing Machine. Please check your machine is in good working order before attending the day. Some basic knowledge of your machine is advisable, to make the most of the day.
Materials included – machine thread, spare bobbins, paper, additional materials for collage and drawing such as acrylic inks. All tools provided except sewing machines.
You will need to bring a sewing machine.

Drypoint with Collagraph
Saturday 22nd February
Tutor – Sue Jarman
10.30 – 4pm
Fee – £65
Suitable for beginners as well as the more experienced.
This course combines drypoint and collagraph printmaking techniques. Exploring with line, shape and texture to produce acrylic plates, you will then produce a series of prints using an etching press. This process is very good for capturing detail, bolder shapes and colour within a print.
Sue is an image maker, printmaker and storyteller. Her work is about creating emotional responses through drawing, painting and illustration, and then taking them somewhere different using printmaking.
She has a wide range of experience running creative workshops and lecturing and is a print member at the Forge.
Linocut Workshop – Repeat pattern printing (Tote Bags)
Saturday 14th March
Tutor – Jonathan Emmerson
10.30 – 4pm
Fee – £65
On this day course you’ll learn how to use the various different linocut tools.
We’ll look at different ways to create a repeating pattern on paper or fabric (Tote Bags) and make our own lino tiles, printing our designs in monochrome and colour. All materials will be provided.
Classes are small – so lots of individual tuition and support. All abilities welcome, including beginners.

Suitable for all levels
Learn about the versatility of mono print techniques. During this day course you will learn how to create a group of expressive, composed Monoprints. This is a day experimenting and learning about the many possibilities of this verstile painterly process.
Included in the day will be an exploration of mark making – including using stencils, making negative and positive images and mixing colour.
Suman Gujral is a Fine Artist and has previously exhibited at the new Museum of St. Albans, Parndon Mill and the Woolwich Print Fair. Last year Suman completed an MA specialising in printmaking for which she received a Distinction. Suman is one of our resident Artists based at the Forge Studios https://www.sumangujral.com
New ‘Refresher’ Print Sessions available
Digswell Arts ‘Forge’ studios now offers a Refresher Print Day for Artists that have previous printmaking experience but feel a little rusty.
Whole days or half days available on Fridays and Saturdays.

This session is suitable for those who have previous experience working independently with printmaking equipment either at college, University or on a Workshop programme, but feel a little rusty.
Assistance, advice and instruction in a variety of Techniques, methods and processes in Printmaking will be on offer by Digswell Arts printmaker Sally Tyrie.
The day includes a health and safety Induction (for those new to the print room at Digswell Arts)

You are advised to choose 1 – 3 techniques from the following list or you may just wish to have advice on how to successfully print from a previously created plate, using our large etching press.
Lino print / Collagraph Print / Drypoint Etching / Monoprint
Materials such as paper and ink can be purchased on the day if requested at booking.
Please note: this is a refresher session and if you would like more in-depth instruction it is advised you book onto one of our Group Workshops.
Whilst ongoing support and help is on hand throughout the day, after initial instruction artists are expected to work fairly independently.

About the Tutors
Sally Tyrie is a Fine Artist Printmaker and has been based at the Forge studios since 2010. She has a BA Hons Degree in Fine Art from Nottingham Trent University and an MA in Fine Art with Distinction from the University of Hertfordshire. Jonathan Emmerson – is an Fine Artist illustrator based at the Forge Studios who works with relief printmaking and fabric design. Katharine Green – Guest Fine Artist Katharine Green has had her work selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and is represented in a number of regional galleries. A number of her designs have also been published as a group of Fine Art greeting cards with ‘Green Pebble’.
