Print Workshops


All these workshops are at The Forge Studios in Digswell near Welwyn, at our fully equipped Printmaking Studio.
Please note that dates are either Fridays or Saturdays.

Facilities include: Large Etching Press and Albion Press, kitchen and ample on-site parking.
The ‘Forge’ is located in Digswell, Herts (near Welwyn) It is 5 minutes drive from the A1M (junc 6) and a 7 minute walk from Welwyn North train station.

Linocut workshop – Butterflies, bugs and beetles

Saturday 28th September
10.30 am – 4pm

Tutor – Jonathan Emmerson

Suitable for all levels

On this day course you’ll learn how to cut, register and print a two colour linocut print based on an invertebrate theme. During the day you will also have the opportunity to look at artists using Lino and Woodcut as well as consider different approaches. You will also learn about registration and printing. All materials will be provided.

Cyanotype Workshop – Creating Cyanotype prints on fabric and paper

Friday 1st November

We will begin with an introduction and overview of the Cyanotype process, the kinds of methods you can use and the variety of prints you can achieve. During the day you will have the opportunity to explore different kinds of imagery – such as drawn and printed onto acetate. Also how to use objects and stencils. You will create vivid bold cyanotype prints on a variety of paper and fabric surfaces. This workshop is very much about experimentation. You may wish to use the day to explore and ‘play’ with ideas or you may have a project in mind and specific imagery you wish to bring in. We will be using ready mixed Cyanotype solution, the uv light box to expose the print and the darkroom to prepare surfaces.

Drypoint with Collagraph

Friday 8th November
10.30am – 4:00pm

Suitable for beginners as well as the more experienced.

This course will combine drypoint and collagraph techniques for printmaking. Experimenting with creating line, shape and texture on a plate – you will then produce a series of prints, from your own design or image, using litho inks on an etching press. This technique is very good for capturing detail and bolder shapes within one print.

About the Tutor:
Sue Jarman is an image maker and printmaker.
A visual artist who tells stories with pictures and creates emotional responses through drawing, painting and illustration – her ideas are taken somewhere different with printmaking.
At present she combines drypoint, collagraph and screenprinting techniques, focusing on line, texture, composition and colour – surfaces and media vary but include paper, fabric, wood.
She also has a wide range of experience running creative workshops and lecturing.

Lino Reduction Print Workshop

Friday 22nd November
Tutor – Katharine Green

Fee – £65

This day workshop will focus on the art of reduction printing. Using one block you will learn how to carve away different layers to produce a multi coloured print. The workshop will begin with a short introduction to this method giving you an understanding of the medium followed by in depth tuition as you work through the process. This class is open to all from beginners to more experienced printmakers. You will go away from this day with a group of multicoloured prints. All materials are included and you will be provided with tea, coffee and snacks.

Exploring Monoprint

Learn about the versatility of mono print techniques. During this day course you will learn how to create a group of expressive, composed Monoprints.

Solar Etching

Saturday 30th November
10.30 – 4.30pm

Tutor – Sally Tyrie


We will look at how to create sophisticated prints using Photopolymer plates. You will create at least one plate from a drawing or Photograph that has been transferred onto acetate. This image will then be exposed onto a light sensitive plate using our UV light box. We will spend the afternoon making prints from your plates and exploring colour & mark making techniques.

You will be provided with an A5 Plate and be able to purchase additional plates if needed. This day is very much about experimentation and taking risks and you will be shown a range of methods when creating your imagery. For instance ways to edit and print your image onto acetate as well as ways to improve the contrast using hand drawn methods. For those that wish to take the process further there will also be the opportunity to try out the use of stencils to create your solar plate.

Although this workshop will be busy and ambitious it is suitable for beginners as well as the more experienced wishing to broaden and develop ideas and project work.

New ‘Refresher’ Print Sessions available

Digswell Arts ‘Forge’ studios now offers a Refresher Print Day for Artists that have previous printmaking experience but feel a little rusty.

Whole days or half days available on Fridays and Saturdays.

This session is suitable for those who have previous experience working independently with printmaking equipment either at college, University or on a Workshop programme, but feel a little rusty.

Assistance, advice and instruction in a variety of Techniques, methods and processes in Printmaking will be on offer by Digswell Arts printmaker Sally Tyrie.

The day includes a health and safety Induction (for those new to the print room at Digswell Arts)

You are advised to choose 1 –  3 techniques from the following list or you may just wish to have advice on how to successfully print from a previously created plate, using our large etching press.

Techniques available:

Lino print / Collagraph Print / Drypoint Etching / Monoprint

Materials such as paper and ink can be purchased on the day if requested at booking.

Please note: this is a refresher session and if you would like more in-depth instruction it is advised you book onto one of our Group Workshops.

Whilst ongoing support and help is on hand throughout the day, after initial instruction artists are expected to work fairly independently.

About the Tutors

Sally Tyrie is a Fine Artist Printmaker and has been based at the Forge studios since 2010.  She has a BA Hons Degree in Fine Art from Nottingham Trent University and an MA in Fine Art with Distinction from the University of Hertfordshire.  Sally’s work has been selected for a number of prestigious competitions and her work can be seen in a number of galleries in the UK. Jonathan Emmerson – is an Fine Artist illustrator based at the Forge Studios who works with relief printmaking and fabric design. Recent exhibitions include; ‘Natural Histories’ at Artistsmeet, Rickmansworth which included large scale fabric designs, limited edition linocut & woodcut prints, and hand-printed cards. http://www.jonathanemmerson.com/

Katharine Green – Guest Fine Artist Katharine Green has had her work selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and is represented in a number of regional galleries.
