Rosie Rigg
Rosie has been involved in Art & Design practice and education throughout her adult life contributing wherever possible to the development of the individual.
Rosie has experienced Art & Design roles in teaching, lecturing, management, consultancy, external verification and examination. She has a clear understanding of the methodologies for engagement, active participation, evaluation and reflection.
A redundancy enabled Rosie to initiate and manage ‘Growing Clearer Minds’ created in collaboration with Mind in Mid Herts and The Triangle Community Garden, Hitchin successfully facilitating Art, Craft and wellbeing activities for people experiencing mental health difficulties in the community. The project successfully helped individuals to overcome some of their inhibitions and feel more comfortable in themselves.
During the same period Rosie was the Voluntary Community Arts Project Manager for Rhythms of The World held annually in Hitchin. Rosie used her experience to engage local schools and artists. She worked with local schools to produce banners and Artwork that was exhibited as part of the festival. Four chosen Artists participated in a residency during the festival weekend enabling them to exhibit and interact with the festival visitors. One of these Artists in residence later became an Arts Fellow at the Digswell Trust.
In retirement she can finally indulge in her own creative practice.
As a print member at The Forge, she can continue her inquisitive and experimental approach to print. Her practice currently revolves around the natural world, fulfilling projects that have for a long time been left on the back burner.
Her prints are usually developed from observational drawings made on site and adapted with her imagination. The technique is collagraph as a substitute for etching where the practitioner uses cardboard as the print plate. Mixed materials are used to create textural and mark making effects directly on the cardboard. The printer can use more than one cardboard plate creating layers of colour adding depth and vibrance to the print.
During a residency at Luton Hoo Walled Garden 2011 the culminating exhibition focused on black and white prints incorporating a wide range of mark making. At this time the garden was dominated by the original 18th century octagonal wall, and a range of glass houses, including a spectacular and semi derelict timber framed Mackenzie Moncur Conservatory dated circa 1911, a vinery and a further glasshouse on the diaphragm wall. It was an inspirational site.
After a lapse of several years Rosie has found returning to her own print practice both challenging and exasperating. Memories continually emerge but the realisation of memories into ideas can be frustrating as well as exhilarating. Collagraph printing is an experimental medium full of happy accidents in conjunction with print disasters.
Access to the print studio at The Forge, Digswell Arts Trust has enabled her to widen her approach, experiment, learn new skills, combine techniques and approaches such a photopolymer, lithography and monotype; not to mention joining a community focused on Art & Design Practice.
