Caryl Beach and Cathy Smale have been brought together in this collaboration through their love of seascapes and a fascination of the beach pebbles found on our shores, worn away over millions of years, each unique from their journey over time and tide.
Caryl works in video, photography and mixed media, and is based at The Forge studios in Digswell:
“The transient nature of landscape and its diversity has fed into my practice, producing journeys recorded in video, mixed media impressions of experiences, photographic snapshots that cannot capture but a hint of the sublime nature of landscape and the sea that encompasses it. The pebble represents a journey through the action of wind, sun, water, gravity and many other forces of nature that have continued to shape it through time”
Cathy uses a palette knife to layer her oil paintings, and works at the studios in The Fenners Building, Letchworth Garden City:
“The British coastline is so diverse, each beach telling its own story of erosion and development, both from natural and human forces. My favourites are the pebble beaches, each stone different, and the overwhelming numbers that line the shores. The seascapes illustrate key features as the shapes describe and build up patterns within the landscape.”
